JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS, is a Content Management System (CMS) consist of a powerful set of PHP scripts that allow you to maintain personal home page in an easy way. There is no need for a database. The pages stored in a simple flat file. I've coded this script because I realize that its hard to found server (especially free space) offering PHP with database support already.

JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS is intended for the people who want to build a simple personal homepage without database suported on their server, and easy maintenance over their sites. If you're just looking for a very simple way to put up a site, or didn't know too much about HTML coding, you might want to use JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS.

And for the HTML coder you shouldn't worry about flat file system used. Even the pages stored on a flat file, it will saves your manual HTML coding if you want to put some code on your pages.

Performance Aspects

For people running small web sites, it's should not cause any problem to edit 5-10 pages. But, for web sites that get hundreds of pages, I didn't think that its a good solutions. As mentioned before JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS created as a small personal home page CMS.

Installation

Upgrade

Upgrading from previous version of JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS is done with replacement of all files except your data. perhaps you should keep your "/data","/news" directory and files in "module/files/" directory.

Local or Remote Servers

Installing JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS is done through some easy steps:

1. Unzip/Untar

Unzip all files to a web root directory on your computer/server with a Windows unzip program or on *nix machine:

tar -zxvf jaf_cms_*.tar.gz [Note: replace the * with the appropriate version.]

Make sure the path names are used when unzipping. You should end up with the following directory structure (* stands for a number of files):

2. Copy/Upload files

Copy all files to your local web root or Upload all files to your server, using your favorite FTP program.

Remember : You'll need to setting up write permissions to be writeable the "/data","/news" and "module/files/" directory and its subdirectory. This is needed in order to allow PHP to write page files into that directory as this directory handle your site contents. The directory should be chmodded to 0777 and all files in these directory should be chmodded to 0666 (depends on servers configuration, read their documentation). Okay.... perhaps you need a servers with ftp service to do that things and many FTP program allow you to do this (eq. WS_FTP, CuteFTP, etc).

List of directory & files that should be chmodded to 0777 or 0666 (writeable) :

Run "install.php" and it will do the rest (creating data configuration files : "data_inc.php"), then jump to step 4, or.... if there is one or another reason, perhaps due to your server configuration do manual setup (step 3).

3. Manual Setup (Remote Servers)

Open "data_inc.php-dist" with your text  editor, and edit what you need to change (site URL, title, etc...etc). All clear with comments on that files. Save this file as "data_inc.php". (see notes) Please do not remove what you shouldn't to remove (eq: copyleft text), its the parts of distribution. See the license.

For creating md5 hashed admin password use "md5.php" script located under admin directory.

Just do the same, Upload all files to your server, using your favorite FTP program. Make sure to upload yours "modified [data_inc.php]" files! or your site might not work otherwise.

4. It's Done!

Yup......... open your web browser and you should now be able to visit your site at http://yoursite.com/ (or whatever URL maps to the location where you uploaded the JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS site main files)

Administration Section

To access the administration section and entering admin control panel, open browser and go to  http://yoursite.com/admin/ and use login/password you've entered on configuration files.

If you've got a trouble error please check again file permission that you should to change to be writeable or if you're always returning to login page please read "IMPORTANT NOTES" regarding session file handling and security.

Security Aspects

.htaccess files (apache servers)

If you feel paranoid about your data, then you can put a .htaccess file on your directory (apache servers only). Even that JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS uses automatic script crawler to read whole directory contents and create site links, it won't be included at navigation links.

We have include .htaccess file in this package on directory "data/", "news/" and "module/files/". For creating your own .htaccess file, please R.T.F.M. apache servers document on your own... :p.

Anonymous CVS Access

JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS project's CVS repository can be checked out through anonymous (pserver) CVS with the following instruction set. The module you wish to check out must be specified as the modulename. When prompted for a password for anonymous, simply press the Enter key. To determine the names of the latest modules created by this project, you may examine our CVS repository via the provided web-based CVS repository viewer. UNIX file and directory names are case sensitive. The path to the project CVSROOT must be specified using lowercase characters (i.e. /cvsroot/jaf-cms)

Hints

How to set my news archive as my StartPage ?

In order to set up your current months archive to be your start page, You've had to edit file "data_inc.php" manually. Replace the $startpage variable code with this one :

$startpage = date ("F Y");

you shouldn't do this via admin configuration panel, it won't work, do it manually with your "data_inc.php" configuration file. After you're using this variable's, your startpage will be pointed to the current months news archive automatically.

Beware if you're using this kind of tricks, imagine that every time the beginning of new month (1st date), maybe your visitors cannot see your site if you're late to submit a news, coz' there is no file archives for that month, unless you've already post a message at the beginning of the day that mean at time 00.00am. okay........

Themes and Skins

We have include some templates theme and skins to be used in this version. More skins will be available soon for download or just create by your self based on default themes. Remember that you have to create a blank file named as same as your skin folder names and make sure you put that file under directory "templates/themes/".

The Skins Template

This section briefly explains which files are used by the skin, and how you can edit them.

The template skin uses two kind of files:

  1. a PHP - HTML Files : consists of html templates in php files.
  2. central.css: CSS stylesheet that defines the page style. Colors, layout etc. are defined in this file
  3. ph03y3nk.gif (optional): The small logo (mine) with hyperlink that appears in the templates design (that would be appreciate if you leave this unchanged, as link exchange)

The CSS file central.css contains extra information about how pages are built up by the default skins and templates. Basically, it comes down to three containers: 1.header & footer looks,  2.body contents looks and 3.navigation link.

To edit the central.css file, you'll need a simple texteditor that does not add extra data, like Notepad (comes with windows),emacs or TextPad. Do not use WordPad, Word, OpenOffice Writer, ... since those add extra markup data.

HTML and CSS

When editing templates, you'll need at least some basic knowledge about HTML and CSS. This section provides some pointers to online tutorials and references:

If you're not understand HTML at all, start learn by now. Its easy scripting language and you can master it before a year, if you learn every day :).

Troubleshooting (FAQ)

I get an error: Cannot send headers. Headers already sent...
This problem is usually caused by whitespace at the beginning or end of config.php. Check if it has spaces or newlines before the starting "<?"or after the ending "?>". If there are, remove them.
When I try to run my website, I'm prompted if I want to download index.php
Your web server is not set up to support PHP scripts. You won't be able to install JAF CMS - ...just another flat file CMS on such a system. find another host server with PHP support already.
When I try to visit my website, I get a 'Config.php not found'. Why?
The reason why this error is shown is that JAF CMS cannot find config.php files on webroot directory or admin directory. make sure you have put that file on webroot and admin directory.
Its already there, but I still get a 'Config.php not found'. Why?
Double check the MarkUp on your config.php files. make sure you have made a modification without altering something.
I can't get my update/create file to work!
Directory and File permissions need to be set correctly in order for the update/create file to work. About the file permissions, make sure the data files is chmodded to writeable (0666) and the directories are chmodded to writeable (0777).
Why the visitors counter and page view counter doesn't seem to work/increase!
The visitors and page view counters is set to ignore local ip address (127.0.0.1), so it won't be counted although you're as admin viewing that page many many times at your local servers. its only work for your site visitors when your site is on line.
