IntroDuction To The Phreakers Manual ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ After long deliberations, I have decided to compile a Phreakers Term Dictionary for those who find it difficult to learn all the ]<-Rad Terms. This is a two part listing. The first part is Chapter II, the Phreak terms and descriptions/definitions. The second part, Chapter III, is the full box listing and "what do they do?", and "where they work" sections. Why did I write this, you ask? Well, did you ever call a board and get a corny 12 page infoform asking you all these technical questions? That's why. Anyway, watch for future updates, and remember, -Versitality is Victory-. Chapter II. Phreakers' Terms and definitions ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ACD: Automatic Call Distributor - System that Automatically distributes calls to operator pools , Airline agents, etc. AIS: Automatic Intercept System - A system using an audio-response unit to automatically provide information to callers diverted to the intercept. ANI: Automatic Number Identification - System that identifies the number of the origin of a call for billing purposes. Backbone Route: Route made up of final group trunks between end offices in different regional center areas. BORSCHT Circuit: Line circuit in central office. functions as mnemonic for functions performed by the circuit. Such as: Battery, Overvoltage, Ringing, Supervision, Coding, Hybrid, and Testing. Bylink: A special high speed route used in Crossbar sytems for disributing calls. Cable Vault: Area in which phone cable enters the central office. CAMA: Centralized Automatic Message Accounting CCIS: Common Channel Inter-Office Signaling - Signaling information for trunk connections over a separate, non-speech datalink. CCITT: International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee - A committee that formulates sets and plans for intercountry communication. (You will notice that many modem protocols such as v22 are CCITT v22) CDO: Community Dial Office - Rural office usually served by step by step equipment. CO: Central Office - Comprised of a switching network and it's control, and support equipment. Centrex: A service comparable in features to PBXes, but implemented with some or all of the control in the Central Office. Customer Loop: Wire pair connecting customer station to central office. DDD: Direct Distance Dialing - Dialing without operator assistance. Direct Trunk Group: Trunk group that is in direct connection between an originating and terminating office. EOTT: End-Office Toll Trunking - Trunking between end offices in different toll areas. ESB: Emergency Service Bureau - Centralized Agency to which 911 emergency calls are routed. ESS: Electronic Switching System - Generic term used to identify as a class stored switching program such as Bell's System #1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. (Also the little fucker that defeats the usage of MANY boxes in many areas) ETS: Electronic Translation System - Electronic replacement for the card translator in 4A Crossbar Systems. Final Trunk Group: Trunk group to which calls are routed when available high- usage trunks overflow. Full Group: Trunk group that does not permit re-routing of off-contingent foreign traffic. High-Usage Trunk Group: The trunk group that has alternate routes via other groups, and ultimately, a final group to the higher ranking office. Interrupt: Interruption on a phone line to disconnect and reconnect with another station. Ex.: Emergency Interrupt Junctor: A wire or circuit connection between networks in the same office. Same as an intra-office trunk. MF: Multi-Frequency - The method of signaling over a trunk making use of the simultaneous application of two out of six possible freqs. ONI: Operator Number Identification - The use of an operator in a CAMA office to verbally obtain the calling number. Used in offices without ANI. PBX: Private Branch Exchange - (PaBX: Private Automatic...) A telephone office serving a private customer, where access to the outside network is provided. SF: Signal Frequency - (2600hz) A signaling method for trunks. Trunk: Path between Central Offices. General Two-Wire for interlocal, 4-Wire for interToll. TSPS: Traffic Service Position System - System that provides under stored progam control, operator assistance for toll calls. X-Bar: (Crossbar) - An electromechanical office type. There are four varieties Four Varieties: #1 Crossbar - Used in large urban office applications. (Applied: 1938) #3 Crossbar - Small system started in 1974 #4a/4m Crossbar - A four wire toll machine (Applied: 1943) #5 Crossbar - Machine intended for small suburban applications (1948) Crossbar Tandem - Machine used for interlocal office switching. Chapter III. Box Listing With Descriptions ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Acrylic Box: Free 3-way, call waiting, Programmable call forwarding, and extended Bud Boxing. AIO (All in One) Box: Combines MANY boxes into one case. Use a PC Case and Power supply and converts floppy bays to switches. By flipping a switch, you change from Red to Blue Etc. Aqua Box: A box designed to drain the voltage of the FBI Lock-In-Trace/Trap- Trace so you can hang up up your Phone in an emergency. Assassin Box: Causes injuries on opposite end via Power surges. Nasty box that can kill someone. (Ain't life grand?) Beagan Box: Remote Controled Beige Box. Beige Box: The simplest box. Splices off of a neighbor's phone box and lets you eavesdrop, call out, recieve calls, prank call, and dial 911 from their line. Black Box: The most famous box by far. Allows the calling party to not be billed for the the call. Gestapo can detect black boxes if they suspect one on the line. Also, These will not work under ESS. Blast Box: Produces amplified sounds to bust the eardrums of an operator, or some asshole who calls the wrong number. Also good for that High school principal or teacher who always bitches about you talking. After this, they won't hear much. Bleeper Boxes: The UK Version of the Blue Box. Modified to work with their phone system. Blotto Box: This box supposedly shorts out every phone in the immediate area and probalbly won't stop there. It should kill every phone anyway that is until it reaches Ma bell, then it gets Filtered out. Blue Box: An old box that simulated an actual operator placing calls, for free of course. The blue box siezes a trunk line on a 1-800 or 555 call. Blue boxes are not safe under ESS and impossible under CCIS. Brown Box: 3-Way calling without the service, on one line. Bud Box: Another name for a Beige box Busy Box: Takes some ones line off hook to incoming calls yet allows outgoing calls. Great for some lame PD Bbs or an asshole Neighbor. Charging Box: Reads line to tell if it is being billed. Tells you whether your codez are working, or whatever. Nifty red and green lights. Chartreuse Box: Taps Ma Bells energy from phone line to power househole items such as computers, refrigerators etc. Cheese Box: When coupled with call forwarding service, this box places free calls. Safety Unknown???? CHINA ROL Box: See ROL Box Below. Clear Box: This works on the principal that all recivers are also weak transmitters. So, it amplifys your signal on a PayPhone and you save some change. Copper Box: Shorts (BURNS) out telco equipment by overloading curcuits with abundances of tones. Crimson Box: Makes your line busy at will. Also functions as a hold button. Dark Box: Emulates multi-line bridges, loop lines, and Direct in-dials. Dayglo Box: Place free calls with No TIME LIMIT, no wiretaps, to anywhere in the world, from anywhere in the world. Diverter Box: Call long distance, and bill it to Australia or another pitiful foreign excuse for a country. Keeps chances of getting caught down. DLOC Box: Conferences over trunk lines, and forms alliances. Green Box: Emulates the coin collect, coin return, and ringback tones. this means if you call somebody from a PayPhone and they have a Green Box you will get your money back. Gold Box: This box will trace calls, Tell if your being traced, and can change a trace. Grey Box: Also know as a Silver Box. See Silver Box below. Jack Box: Changes phone tones. Makes a good lineman's handset. Light Box: Makes an in-use light for a phone line. Good for beige boxing on neighbor's phone line. Lunch Box: Tap/Remote Tap Box with transmitter and reciever. Mauve Box: Pull in nearest cordless phone conversation. Great to see whats up with those nosy neighbors. Modu-Box: Easy connection of tone generators/boxes without destroying a phone. MoRGUE-Box: Produces tones from 37hz to 65535hz over phone line, via Computer. D/L Morgue issue 11 for schematics and Tone Generation Program. Neon Box: Provides a clear path from computer to phone line. This preserves tones so they do not become distorted. Also records tones/voices for blackmail or personal usage. Noise Box: Line noise filter for local calling. Very common, found in Radio Shack catalogs. Olive Box: Re-Routes ringing from phone to another source such as a light, a better tone producing speaker, or your stereo. Paisley Box: Seizes operator lines, Has all features of blue, beige and blotto built in. Adds Remote control operation over TSPS and TOPS system consoles. Pandora's Box: Poor man's Phasor. Produces tones capable of ear injury, and causes pain via high freq sounds. Party Box: 3-way, 4-way, or a million-way calling. Supresses line noise, and static, and leaves no excess wire from phone. Creates a virtual party line. Pearl Box: Produces tones ranging from 1hz to 9999hz. (Emulates Blue and Red, and many other boxes.) Purple Box: A Fifty-In-One Box. Free calls anywhere via blue boxing, become an operator via blue box, conference calling, disconnect phone lines tap phones, detect traces, intercept directory assistance calls. Has all red box tones. All these features are not available under Hated ESS. Rainbow Box: The ultimate box. You can become an operator . You get free calls blue box. you can set up conference calls. You can forcefully disconnect phone lines. You can tap lines, Detect traces, Change traces, and trace as well. All incoming calls are free, you can intercept directory assistance. You have all the MF tones. However heh it doesn't work under ESS. Razz Box: Beige box Clone. Red Box: Box that will emulate the tones produced when coins are deposited into a payphone. Easy to manufacture and use. Rock Box: Inputs Stereo driven music into phone. No major phreaking usage. (Garbage) Scarlet Box: Produces awful connections on any line it is set on. This is also useful against lame boards, people or what have you. Silver Box: Accesses special AutoVan line via DTMF tones. For More Info. read Schematics found on any Major H/P Bbs. Spike Box: Generates upwards of 9000volts and sends it through the phone line. This can fry a person, computer, modem, or an answering machine, and even a Gestapo Employee. (Also Called a TESLA COIL) Static Box: Line Static/Noise suppressor for LD calls. Sword Box: Bud/Beige Box emulator, and Dayglo built into one. Another AIO. Tan box: Record and use (Blackmail?) via beige box. Tangerine Box: Eavesdrop without pickup click, or ANY noise at all. Can be set up to record. Another useful blackmailing device. Tap Box: Another of the endless "eavesdropping" boxes. Same as Tan and a few million others. Transmit Box: Extensive phone tap, providing a transmitter and reciever so you don't have to sit outside the fucking house to listen in. Tron Box: Free power for house via phone line. (Juice Ma Bell like that bitch juices you.) Urine Box: Creates capacitative disturbance on someones line between ring and tip wires in their phone. Creates an unbearable connection. White Box: Portable DTMF KeyPad. Yellow Box: Connect two phones to same jack. Obviously from back before Radio Shack opened it's doors. (Jack Splitters cost 79 cents here.)
